Exploring Hou Hai Lake

During my time in Beijing I've heard about Hou Hai Lake, the giant lake that freezes over and Beijingers flock there to ice bicycle. Yep, you heard me right! They don't go there to ice-skate, they go to ride an ice bicycle #onlyinbeijing.

Paul's not the biggest ice-skating fan in the world. His one experience involved him skating/hobbling around a rink at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, genuinely fearing death with every step while 5 year old children overtook him. My cunning plan was to get him there on the pretence of going for a walk then dragging him onto the ice, but on arriving there and seeing that only part of the lake was actually frozen I decided I valued my life slightly more than the Beijingers that has opted to go onto the ice (and much to Paul's relief!)

So instead, we walked around the lake, which is mahoosive by the way! It's such a nice walk though as it is right amount the Hutongs. I just love walking through the Hutongs, you find the most random little buildings in the most unexpected places. Every single building looks different and has it's own unique trademark or selling point. They are definitely one of Beijing's highlights if you're ever visiting.

In true crazy Beijing style, the lake was completely full of people ice-biking, ice-skating, ice-walking and sledding, despite the fact that there were ducks swimming in completely unfrozen water mere steps from where they were. It was fun to watch though (mostly because nobody fell through the unfrozen ice while we were there) and we will probably never see a sight like it anywhere else in the world. They even had a slide, a rubber duck (????) and a bouncy castle right in the middle of the ice. Also in true Beijing style, grown adults were squealing as they went down the tiny kids slide. We spent a huge amount of time watching (and laughing at) them.

It's a shame we didn't get to go on the ice, especially as this will be out last winter in Beijing, but it was still great to be in the Hutong atmosphere.

  19. I've never heard of ice-biking before but I really want to try it. We got snow here yesterday for the first time since, well, ever. But it melted so fast. I'm going to have to go there for real snow and as I mentioned, to go ice-biking. Everything looks beautiful and I bet it was fun to take it all in.
