A Change of Heart

In January I wrote all about my final flight to Beijing and my excitement at moving to London. It's strange how drastically things can change in the space of a week.

For a while we have been looking at properties in London and feeling increasingly more worried about how expensive it is. The thing is, we weren't just looking to rent a rundown flat, we were looking at somewhere to settle and that doesn't come cheap. We were still set on a move back to the UK though and I had even started to apply for jobs.

Then, one day when we were at the Great Wall, I got a message from an old Deputy Head who is now Head of a school in Singapore, letting me know she had a position available. I would have absolutely loved to work for her and Singapore for a couple of years would have been amazing. This got us to talking about staying abroad and moving to Singapore. We started to get excited about this idea, but when we found our the package offered for Singapore, while it was good, the cost of living and package together wouldn't have allowed us to save much, which is the main reason we were considering staying abroad.

Which led us to talk about Beijing, a conversation I never thought we'd be having. We're pretty settled here in Beijing and with some changes to our lives, like this and this we could be happy for 2 more years here. But more than that, at the age of 30 it's time to start thinking ahead which is something I've never really done before. 2 more years in Beijing would allow us to save double what we could in Singapore and about 75% of what we could in the UK. While it may not have been our first choice, all sensible options point to completing 1 more contract in Beijing.

And so, that is what we are doing. As this decision has been made we have become more accustomed to the idea and are looking forward to what the next 2 years will bring. There are some very clear things we need to work on to find out happy place, but 2 more years in Beijing is looking like a good option for us and I'm looking forward to exploring more of Asia.

What else should we check out in Asia over the next 2 years? Let me know!

  1. I've been to Beijing and the Great Wall. It's such a unique experience for sure. I taught English there for 2 weeks way back when one summer. :)

  2. I do hope you will come over to England for a holiday but well done for thinking sensibly about your future and working out what would be best for you. Because London is very expensive and while Beijing might not have been your first choice, at least you are enjoying it out there nevertheless!

  6. I think it's so hard to make decision. Career turns are always very hard to to make and if you have a permanent partner it's even harder. Beijing is a nice place I feel you, my husband lived there for over 2 years and always is warm about Chinese capital.

You'll never regret getting some savings behind you, especially if you want to move to London. And maybe now I'm half a world closer, I can come visit while you're actually still there! :) xxx

  11. I like how composed you are with all these: moving to London and it's expensive and a work position over at Singapore that means starting to think about staying there again. Either way, I'm certain you'll have a good experience and all the best in exploring Asia!

  17. Sometimes the changes we never thought of are the best ones.
Even though I've never been to the UK I know it's very expensive.
I hope everything works out, and Beijing may be the best choice after all!

  19. How crazy to be discussing what COUNTRY to love in! I can’t even imagine. I have lived in the same area my whole life until recently we moved 1,300 miles from home to Flagstaff, AZ. I think you are making the right decision by staying put. You are being smart to keep saving money. Good job!
